This book contains important information that all genealogists need to attend to. Others have written with clarity about the subject matter. My comment here has to do with the utter inadequacy of the Kindle version. The book involves reading, then doing exercises at the end of the chapter, then referring to an appendix, etc. This is not handy on the Kindle. To achieve the full benefit of the knowledge contained, one must consult the print version. Definitely purchase the book if you're interested in the subject.
The book deserves 5 stars in non e-book format. Trying to read the e-book and then try to return to a special page or jump forward to study it.....I wish I had bought the hard copy. Dr. Jones is an expert in his field and the book is filled with wonderful information and helpful ways to document one's genealogical work.
As a professional genealogist I thoroughly enjoyed this book. He details the Genealogical Proof Standard and reasoning processes. He explains primary and secondary information as well as direct and indirect evidence. He includes exercises at the end of each chapter to help us further understand the genealogical steps and requirements. I liked the detailed section on citations and how to create them. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 rating is because only 50% of the book is actually instruction on mastering genealogical proof. The other half is an appendix with reprints of articles he has written. I have read many, many genealogy books explaining the requirements and research techniques. I have to say this is the best I have read to date. The text is clear and easy to understand which is rare. The writing style keeps the readers' interest. I have found many books on this subject to be frustrating and confusing. Not this one! This is top notch!
It was entirely too complex for my level of genealogical research. I can see where this would be a valuable resource for proving one's conclusions for each amount of data reviewed, but the time and energy in providing those proofs was entirely too overwhelming for me at this point in my genealogical story. Citing my sources through Elizabeth Shown Mills' examples is plenty good for me at this point in time.
This book is very good at breaking down the genealogical proof process in discrete easy to grasp chunks. I'm already implementing some of the many points covered in the book. It is also written in easy-to-understand language and goes the extra mile to provide a glossary of terms discussed throughout. Highly recommended amateur genealogists like myself who need a better understanding of what's involved with the GPS (Genealogical Proof Standard).
Not finished reading it but so far it is excellent. I'm Treasurer of our local Genealogy Club, a member of the Clark County Nevada Genealogy Society (CCNGS) and a member of the National Genealogy Society (NGS). If you are just starting out in the field, it is a good book to have as it explains some methodologies you should use in your search. I have it on my Kindle Fire HD so I can take it with me to read when the time permits.
The basic genealogical information provided in this resource is valuable. However, I am not so sure I like the "workbook" section. Fortunately, the answers are provided at the end of the book.

Well I recalled seeing this book several years ago when there simply were not a lot of books discussing off road driving and recovery. I decided to pickup a used copy and ended up being pretty disappointed. While there is decent information in the book it really lacks updated information and illustrations. A few days later I also received Jim Allen's Four Wheeler's Bible and wow what a difference. Now I'm not here to write a review on another book but all I am saying is there is much more relevant information out there. I would leave this one on the shelf because it belongs in the 90's when the book was written.
This book alone would not be my first choice for someone just getting started.I have an extensive background working with vehicles, from a wide variety of on and off road vehicles to amateur and semi-pro race cars. I also have nearly 30 years of recreational off-road experience.I felt the author spent an inordinate amount of time on mechanical minutia, and he was either inarticulate about it or had such a tenuous grasp of it that the information bordered between misleading and erroneous. I feel that he skimmed over the important information for which a reader would more likely have bought such a book. He often cites specific brand gear rather than offering the criteria that one should use to choose the gear according to the type of trails and personal experience level.I bought this book, and another, to use as instructional material for my own budding off-road enthusiasts. This will serve fine as supplemental information. And in that respect, I can recommend this book. However, if your budget only allows the purchase of one book and you currently have no others, then I must withhold my recommendation.
As a newbie to four wheel driving, this book is worth its weight in gold to me. Okay, maybe I'm exagerrating a bit; however, I could not find another 4x4 book on the market with the wealth of information that this has.I now feel "free" as the title suggests, to take my new FJ cruiser off the beaten path.Wish me luck!
Someone once told me that the best tool you can bring on an off road trip is knowledge of your vehicle and techniques to get out of a sticky situation. If you don't have the experience it doesn't hurt to read up on the subject you intend to tackle. Great book.

This book has some very useful information and is very easy to understand. I thought that the extra equipment/gear lists were a bit long and for myself some is not realistic to carry. If the information in this book is combined with other publications a good list of gear to carry on a 4 wheel adventure could be developed. The additional resources listed in this book were also very helpful. For new and experienced off-roaders this book is a useful tool.

Ten-year-old Arthur and his grandmother are doing just fine on their own -- except for that Grandpa has been missing in Africa for four years and a developer villain is evicting them from their own house. Things sour further when antique dealers haul away all of Grandpa's priceless African artifacts and books. Arthur is certain that his grandfather must have left some hidden message somewhere that will reverse their current downward spiral. He hopes to discover some way to enter the world of the beautiful, red-haired, blue-eyed African Princess Selenia that he saw in his grandfather's sketches; member of a tiny (less-than-an-inch-tall) tribe called the Minimoys that he suspects might live in Grandma's garden. But how, when Grandpa's attic has been stripped of clues?
Besson's story contains many of the elements of a good, suspenseful children's adventure, but it is often over told, employs an abundance of facile plot solutions, and loses threads and themes in a long, dizzying action-adventure sequence that abruptly ends as "to be continued." Still, it's hard to resist a likeable hero-protagonist, treasure maps, the promise of rubies, and a land of warring tiny people. Let the hype begin! The sequel Arthur and the Forbidden City is due in fall 2005, and Arthur, a computer-animated movie based on the books, is due out in 2006, with Madonna voicing the part of Princess Selenia. Grade 4-6–A French film director tries his hand at fantasy for children. In order to save his grandparents' home from foreclosure and find his missing grandfather, Arthur magically enters the land of the Lilliputian Minimoys through the garden, where he falls in love with tiny Princess Selenia. Now Minimoy-sized, he travels with her and her younger brother towards Necropolis, the center of power for the evil Maltazard and the place where he believes his grandfather is a prisoner. The journey is perilous and replete with battles with the villain's henchmen, and the book ends with our three heroes facing new dangers on their way to Necropolis. The jacket blurb informs readers that there will be two films based on this book and its sequel. Indeed, the volume is full of situations that are likely to work more successfully on film than in print. The author informs readers about the characters' reactions and feelings rather than revealing them through the story, and sections of the book read almost like explanations of the characters to actors. Arthur shifts from being a very young-seeming 10-year-old to being in love with and wanting to marry the princess in a way that is not believable. The narrator's tone is condescending and there are asides that appear to be addressed to adult readers. About the Author
WAJDI MOUAWAD has worked as an actor and director, and his original plays have become a central element in many theatres across Quebec. Mouawad was the winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award in 2000, and earned the position of Artistic Director of the National Arts Centre French Theatre in 2007.
LINDA GABORIAU is a dramaturg and literary translator credited with translating over 100 titles, including a number of plays by such reknowned writers as Michel Tremblay, Jean Marc Dalpé, Daniel Danis, and Michel Marc Bouchard. Gaboriau was the founding director of the Banff International Literary Translation Centre.
